There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are supposedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is correct of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, features 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of amenities in addition to the gambling den, which provides 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
