There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are situated in a generally tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.

The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries aside from the casino, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
